ELBC 2026: Modular Battery Machine Design

Battery production lines are under pressure. Manufacturers of AGM and SLI batteries face growing demands for output flexibility, faster changeovers and tighter cost control at the same time. The answer, increasingly, lies in modular machine design.

At ELBC 2026 in Vienna, CMWTEC will show exactly what that means in practice. From a dedicated speaker session in the Supplier Forum to a live machine reveal on the show floor, this year’s ELBC is where CMWTEC brings its engineering philosophy out of the factory and in front of the industry.

Whether you’re evaluating a new finishing line, looking to upgrade specific process steps, or simply want to understand where AGM and SLI battery production technology is heading: Booth 93 is where it starts.

Why Modular Machine Design Is the Future of Battery Finishing Lines

For decades, battery finishing lines were engineered around a fixed set of assumptions: defined battery formats, stable product mixes, predictable output requirements. That model worked, until it didn’t.
Today’s battery manufacturers face a fundamentally different operating environment. AGM battery producers are managing tighter quality tolerances and increasingly complex formation profiles. SLI producers are dealing with more frequent format changes as automotive OEMs diversify their platforms. Both face rising pressure to reduce capital expenditure per unit of output.

The response from traditional equipment suppliers has often been to add complexity. Larger machines, more automation, longer installation cycles. Modular machine design takes the opposite approach.
Instead of specifying a single monolithic system, a modular battery finishing line is built from purpose-designed process units that can be combined, reconfigured, or extended as production requirements change. Process steps, as formation charging, acid filling, washing, testing, are engineered as discrete, interoperable modules. The line scales with the business, not against it.

CMWTEC has built this principle into both its Premium Line and ECO Line equipment families. Each machine in the lineup is engineered to function as a standalone unit or as part of a larger integrated battery assembly line. The result is a finishing line architecture that reduces dependency on a single system configuration and keeps upgrade paths open throughout the equipment lifecycle.

At ELBC 2026, CMWTEC’s VP Sales Michael Wipperfuerth will go deeper on this topic in a dedicated Supplier Forum session, drawing on nearly four decades of battery finishing line engineering to make the case for modular design as the new production standard.

AGM & SLI Battery Production: What High Efficiency Actually Means

High efficiency is not simply about speed. In battery finishing line engineering, the word covers a range of process and operational factors that interact in ways that aren’t always obvious from a specification sheet.
For AGM battery production, efficiency starts with precision. AGM cells require exact vacuum acid filling. Deviation in acid volume or distribution directly affects cell capacity and cycle life. Formation charging profiles for AGM batteries are longer and more differentiated than for flooded lead-acid types, meaning the charging infrastructure needs both capacity and the ability to manage individual cell variation. A finishing line optimised for AGM throughput has to hold tight tolerances across all of these variables simultaneously, at volume.

SLI battery production presents a different challenge. The format diversity across the SLI market, as different case sizes, terminal configurations, CCA requirements, means that a production line serving multiple OEM programs or aftermarket segments will face frequent changeover demands. Downtime during changeover is direct margin loss. High-efficiency SLI lines are engineered to minimise changeover time without compromising the formation and testing accuracy that determines battery warranty performance.

What modular machine design adds to both scenarios is structural adaptability. When a process module can be reconfigured or replaced without taking the entire line offline, efficiency is no longer just a function of machine speed. It becomes a property of the line architecture itself.

This is what CMWTEC engineers when it talks about high-efficiency finishing lines: not a single KPI, but a design approach that keeps the line performing across changing production demands. Michael Wipperfuerth’s ELBC session will address exactly what high-efficiency modular design looks like in practice for AGM and SLI producers, and where the next generation of battery assembly line architecture is heading.

CMWTEC at ELBC 2026 – What to Expect at Booth 93

ELBC 2026 runs from 14 to 18 September in Vienna. CMWTEC will be at Booth 93.

On Wednesday, 16 September at 14:25, Michael Wipperfuerth takes the stage in Supplier Forum Room K2.
His session: “High Efficient Modular Machine Design for AGM and SLI Battery Production Lines”
Ten minutes. One argument. What modular machine architecture actually delivers and why the battery industry’s next finishing line investments should be built around it.

Michael brings close to four decades of experience in battery finishing line engineering to this session. If you are evaluating capital equipment for AGM or SLI production, this is the session to be in the room for.
A New Machine. Revealed Live.
CMWTEC is bringing a new machine to Vienna.

No name yet. No specifications sheet. The reveal happens at Booth 93 — in person, on the show floor. If you want to be among the first to see it, you know where to find us.

ESEMA at ELBC 2026: The Industry Network Behind the Innovation

CMWTEC is a founding member of ESEMA, the European battery equipment supplier association. At ELBC 2026, ESEMA member companies will be present across the show floor, representing the full production chain from plate manufacturing through to finishing and testing.

For battery manufacturers attending ELBC, the ESEMA presence at the conference means access to a coordinated group of equipment specialists. Each focused on a distinct part of the production process, and all aligned around the same goal: more efficient, more reliable battery manufacturing.

CMWTEC’s position within ESEMA reflects a broader view of what battery production equipment should be. Individual machines matter. But the relationships between process steps — how formation interacts with filling, how testing data feeds back into line configuration — matter more. ESEMA exists to build that systems-level thinking across the supplier community.

In Vienna, that thinking goes on display.
