EIS stands for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. An EIS test applies a small alternating signal to a lithium-ion cell and measures its impedance across a range of frequencies. The resulting impedance spectrum shows the internal condition of the cell, so its performance and expected lifetime can be assessed without charging or discharging it.
The operator places the lithium pouch or prismatic cells on a fixture on the tray. The test itself then runs fully automatically. Multiple test profiles can be configured and combined in one sequence on the main HMI screen, and the results are transferred to higher-level systems via CAN bus and Ethernet interface.
Cells with deviating internal properties reduce the performance and lifetime of the whole battery module. EIS testing before assembly classifies each cell and identifies deviations in the incoming cell quality at an early stage. This allows manufacturers to sort out faulty cells and continuously monitor the quality of their cell supply.
The Semiautomatic EIS Test Machine for Lithium Pouch Cells measures up to 32 impedance points simultaneously and predicts battery performance and lifetime in about one second per test. This makes EIS classification fast enough for regular quality control in production, not only for laboratory analysis.
