HRD Test Machine – The basic unit of the HRD Battery Testing Machine accommodates the swinging arm components and contains the spring-loaded balancer and test heads with contact cable. The basic unit can be fixed on top of a PLT test device. The test head is an individual design test probe for automotive batteries. The probe is designed to contact by pushing from the top (no clamping) DIN, JIS, and FLAT Terminals of batteries. With two corresponding power cables connected. to the PLT the test head will be placed onto the battery positive and negative terminal.

HRD stands for high rate discharge. An HRD test discharges a battery at a very high current for a few seconds and measures how the voltage responds. It checks whether the battery can deliver power under real load. If the voltage holds up, the battery passes, and if it collapses, there is a fault inside the battery.
The HRD tester is a basic unit that can be fixed on top of a PLT test device, such as a Digatron PLT, and is connected to it with two power cables. The operator places the test head onto the battery’s positive and negative terminals. The probe contacts DIN, JIS and flat terminals by pushing from the top, without clamping.
A voltage that collapses under the high current points to a fault inside the battery, for example a weak weld, an internal short or incomplete formation. More details are in our guide Choosing the Right HRD Tester.
